Profile

I am a faculty member of the English Department at Mesa Community College (MCC), a Maricopa Community College, in Arizona. I teach English courses in several areas including English as a Second Language, College Writing, and Linguistics.

My research interests include Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Composition, Rhetoric, and Critical Discourse Studies. To me, all these academic areas share a common thread: Language and social life are inextricably intertwined. To understand one, the other must be studied and critically analyzed; and to learn language well and use it effectively, one must understand and appreciate how language is used to represent the world and establish and maintain social relationships and identities.

My research as well as my teaching is informed by Critical Discourse Studies, Multimodal Discourse, and Systemic Functional Linguistics.

In addition to teaching English at MCC, I have served as coordinator of the  English Language Program  and  faculty advisor in the International Education Office;   I am currently chair of the  College Research  Review Committee  (CRRC) at MCC, and chair of the  Institutional Review Board  (IRB) at the District.

For ten years I served as the area chair of Arab Culture in the U.S. at the annual conference of the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association. I  also served on the boards of Radius of Arab American Writers   (RAWI)  and the  Arab American Studies Association.  Additionally, I am former president of the Board of the Arizona affiliate  of   TESOL  International Association.
